Beyond the boundaries in Japan
2018 dates: January 13-21, 2018
Japan is known for having the lightest, fluffiest snow on the planet. The mountains are rolling, the landscape is gorgeous, and the resorts offer endless stashes of Japanese powder, better known as Japow! For the first time in January 2018, Beyond the Boundaries is heading across the Pacific to snowboard on the North Island of Hokkaido!
The 9-day trip focuses on in bounds and out of bounds (conditions permitting) at Niseko United (home to multiple resorts), Asarigawa Onsen Winter Resort, and Rusutsu. Each mountain has its own personality, snowpack, and epic views. Land in Sapporo and head to the Japanese coast to warm up at a mountain unlike any other before driving to Niseko to post up for four more days of snowboarding. Niseko is home not only to beautiful mountains, but also is known for its luxurious onsen. It's the perfect place to make powder turns during the day and relax during the evening. While in Niseko, we will immerse ourselves in traditional Japanese culture through sights, sounds, and culinary experiences. Did we mention the ramen, yet? For four days, we will follow the snow, riding at different resorts and getting as much powder as possible! Learn about backcountry safety from your guides who will prepare you for resort-accessed out of bounds terrain. Whether you are familiar with your beacon, shovel and probe, or new to the off piste, BTBounds will help you to grow your knowledge and spend time in the mountains as safely as possible. Once we've gotten plenty of powder slashes, it's time to head to the cities! We will spend a night in Sapporo, enjoying a delicious meal and trying out different types of sake. The following morning, it's off to Tokyo! A quick morning flight and we're in one of the most bustling cities in the world! For the next two and a half days, we will explore this unique place. The Harajuku District and the Robot Cafe are on the schedule for the first day in Tokyo. For the second day, the owl cafe, some of Tokyo's most interesting landmarks, and a night of noodles and karaoke end the trip on an exciting note! The final day we enjoy breakfast and a few last glimpses of Japan before boarding our flights home.

9-Day Tour Schedule:
Day 1: Arrive in Sapporo at the New Chitose Airport (CTS) in the evening. Meet BTB staff at Sapporo airport and make the short drive to Otaru, a small harborside city on the northwest of Hokkaido. We will check into our hotel, grab our first Japanese dinner and rest up for the first day of snowboarding!
Day 2: Snowboarding at Asarigawa Onsen Winter Resort, a small mountain with sweeping views of the ocean and amazing onsen for apres! After riding and enjoying the onsen, we will enjoy some of the best ramen in Japan and then drive he 1.5 hours to Niseko, our home base for the next couple of days.
Day 3: Rise and shine in the beautiful ski town of Niseko! After a traditional Japanese breakfast, we will head to one of the four individual resorts of Niseko United (which one will depend on snow and weather conditions). After riding, we will relax in the onsen and enjoy more traditional Japanese food for dinner. After dinner, the choice is yours, rest and relaxation or enjoy some late night sake.
Day 4: Hopefully Mother Nature is sending some Japow our way! We will head again to Niseko United, this time riding at a new resort with the best snow of the day. Grand Hirafu, Annupuri, Niseko Village, or Hanazono—we will find the best conditions and make pow slashes all day! In the evening, after more time relaxing in the onsen and trying out local sake, we will head to a special dinner!
Day 5: More of the same is never a bad thing when you’re in Japan! Today we will head 30 minutes away to Rusutsu, a nearby resort, and explore new terrain! After a long day of riding and hopefully scoring great snow, we will return to our hotel in Niseko to relax, enjoy dinner and either rest up or enjoy the Niseko nightlife, your call!
Day 6: We’ve built in five days of snowboarding, just in case we have a weather day and to provide an optional rest day if anyone would like one, as riding lots of powder can be very exhausting! But, baring storms, we will head back to experience another Niseko United resort today, our final day of riding on the North Island before we head to the city! At night, we will drive to Sapporo for dinner, drinks, and karaoke!
Day 7: We'll wake up and hop on a short flight to Tokyo in order to explore this incredible city in the afternoon. On the agenda over the next two days: the sights and sounds of the city including historic temples, the Harajuku District, traditional Japanese cuisine, unique experiences like owl cafes, and much more!
Day 8: A full day in Tokyo to explore and experience the magic of the city. We’ll continue taking in the bright lights and iconic experiences of this amazing place. We’ll continue the exploration started the day before, add in the Robot Cafe and end the night with Japanese karaoke!
Day 9: Breakfast and departure for home from Narita Aiport in Tokyo (NRT). You’ll arrive back home on the same day, Sunday, ready to start the week back in reality. Sigh.
